His discovery of the ancient hill-top settlement of Tell Halaf shed major new light on the ancient civilisation of the Assyrian Empire, which had been thought lost.

Yet Max von Oppenheim deserves to be regarded as more than just the most significant arcaeologit of the Near East og the 20h century - the Tell Halaf Museum in Berlin, which he established, and the foundation associated with it, made Oppenheim a true patron of culture, a man whose achievements bridged the gap between East and West.
